Carlos Vela is regarded as one of the top strikers

Carlos Vela is regarded as one of the top strikers for the Mexican national team, but he has not featured for the national team in major tournaments due to one reason or the other. His most recent pullout came during the 2014 World Cup when Vela withdrew from the national team due to unknown reasons.

It is widely expected that the national team would not be calling up the Real Sociedad striker due to his uncertain nature. However, rumours have once again cropped up that the former Arsenal man could be in the squad during the Copa America or the Gold Cup.

After having recently spoken out against the national team, Vela has stated that everyone would like to play for their national teams in the hope of winning a major tournaments. It will be the case when the two major tournaments arrive in the summer. Mexico will not be announcing their national team squad for the Copa America until May 11. It gives Vela with little time to make up his decision on his international future. The 26-year-old has been suffering from niggling injuries of light. He only recently returned to the first-team for the first time since January in the 1-0 defeat against Elche.

"Right now, what I want is to get my knee better. I've still got problems, I've not recovered 100 percent. One plays for Mexico aiming to be champion, I want to contribute. The decision about which [cup] I will go to depends on what the coach has in mind,” said the striker. Since he has not started a game since the last week of January, it remains to be seen if his fitness levels will please Mexico manager Miguel Herrera.Herrera, though, stated that he is delighted at the availability of Vela for the national team.
