Herrera Has Not Given Up On Vela Possibility

Mexico’s manager Miguel Herrera has stated that he has not given up on the possibility of being able to use former Arsenal striker Carlos Vela for the national team. The Mexican international has not been representing the national team in the last few years. Even though he has been part of Mexico’s qualification matches, he invariably pulls out when it comes to major tournaments. Mexico have a wealth of attacking options in the form of Javier Hernandez and Giovanni Dos Santos. Despite this, Herrera will be able to take advantage of Vela, who has come in leaps and bounds in the last few years.
Since making the move to Real Sociedad permanent a few years ago, Vela has been playing regular football. This appears to have contributed to the growth in his form. There was even talk of a potential return to Arsenal this summer. Despite having agreed a fee with Real Sociedad for the return of Vela, the Premier League were unable to bring him back as the forward choose the prospect of regular first-team football over playing a role as the backup for Olivier Giroud. Now, Mexico’s manager Herrera says that he wants to bring the striker back to international football.
Vela has been on a self-imposed exile from the national team for reasons only known to the striker. “I’m going to observe Vela and Jonathan and speak to them to see if they are interested,” said the national team manager, who has received a lot of plaudits for the way he transformed the Mexican international came on the World Cup 2014. After having only just managed to sneak into the finals, Mexico almost reached the quarter-finals at the expense of Netherlands. However, they were eventually beaten by two goals in the last five minutes of the match.
