VELA INSPIRES SOCIEDAD TO WIN OVER ATLETICO

A much needed win by Atletico, to help them advance to the top of the La Liga’s table last Saturday was thwarted by a Real Sociedad team, heavily inspired by Carlos Vela.


The 2-0 win came as Carlos Vela went on to score one penalty, and win another for his team.

With this win by Real Sociedad, Atletico stays at the third position on the La Liga table, with a total of 21 points from 11 games played so far. Real Madrid leads the pack followed closely by Barcelona. However, Atletico is just behind Barca with one point and three points behind Los Blancos.

Real Sociedad will be celebrating their first ever win against Atletico Madrid since November 2014, when they last won and are on the sixth position on the table with 19 points from 11 games played so far.

The home side during the game, dominated most of it from the stat, but a chance was missed by Atletico, one which has been described as their best chance after Kevin Gameiro raced clear but ended up hitting the post with a dinked shot that went high over Sociedad keeper, Geronimo Rulli.

Carlos Vela, former Arsenal forward was very lively in the game, especially around the right flank. He gave Sociedad the lead in the 54th minute after he calmly slotted home a penalty awarded after Gabi, Atletico’s captain tripped down Yuri Berchiche, Sociedad’s left back.

A jinking run by Vela produced another spot kick after he was brought down by Angel Correa, Atletico’s substitute in the 75th minute of the game. The spot kick, taken by Willian Jose was blasted past Jan Oblak, Atletico’s goalie to produce the second goal of the match. Antoine Greizmann’s close range shot in order to redeem his team’s image was cleared off.
